1. Program' s Philosophy

To produce graduates capable of conducting advanced research to produce new knowledge in polymer science and technology. The graduates will have initiatives, show academic and technological leadership and possess good moral, academic and professional ethics.

2. Expected Learning Ourcomes (ELOs)

ELO 1: Graduates are able to explain polymer structure, properties and processing in chemical and physical aspects.
ELO 2: Graduates are able to implement knowledge for polymer synthesis , modification and processing.
ELO 3: Graduates demonstrate laboratory skills, analyze scientific information, and are able to conduct and solve research problems. 
ELO 4: Graduates are able to communicate and collaborate effectively with others as well as be responsible to assigned work.
ELO 5: Graduates are able to assess knowledge and information in polymer literatures
ELO 6: Graduates are able to create research methodology in order to invent knowledge insight and have ability to solve national polymer problems.

SCCH 523 Polymer Chemistry (3 credits)

Polymerisation reaction (types, mechanism and kinetics, molecular structure and molecular weight control), copolymerisation, methods of polymerisation, chemical reaction of polymers, polymer degradation and protection, polymer structure and properties relationship, polymer solution (theory and properties), phase equilibria, phase diagrams and their applications

SCCH 524 Polymer Characterisation (1 credit)

An overview of the common techniques for determining the structure and characteristics of polymeric materials. Molecular Structural Characterization, Solubility test, Polymer identification, Chemical analysis, Spectroscopic technique. Characterization based on Molecular size, Molecular organization, Surface morphology and other special methods for new polymers

SCCH 596 Polymer Rheology and Processing (2 credits)

Definition of rheology, types of deformation, Newtonian and non-Newtonian behaviour, viscoelastic properties, measurement of flow properties, oscillatory shear flow, steady shear flow, factors affecting flow behaviour of polymer melts, basic knowledge on polymer mixing and processing

SCCH 543 Polymer Physics (3 credits)

Molecular structure of polymers, packing of polymer molecules in solid state, crystal structure, polymer morphology: shapes of polymer crystal, crystallisation and melting of polymers, oriented structure, viscoelastic properties: creep, stress relaxation and dynamic properties, transition temperature of polymers, time-temperature equivalence, mechanical properties : general mechanical properties, deformation behaviours, breaking behaviours, strengths of polymers 

SCCH 565 Techniques in Polymer Science (2 credits)

Monomer purification, polymer synthesis by free radical polymerization involving bulk polymerization and emulsion polymerization and, polymer molecular weight determination by gel permeation chromatography, thermal analysis of polymers by using thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimeter, polymer characterisation by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, analyzing the polymer surface  by atomic force microscopy technique, determination of mechanical properties of polymers  by nanoindentation and tensile testing, corrosion studies of polymers

Background and importance of polymer colloidal systems and natural rubber latex, synthesis of polymer colloids (mechanism of emulsion polymerization and other polymerizations) and of latex with specific characteristics (e.g., magnetic particles, hollow particles), properties of polymer colloids (stabilization  and rheological behavior), characterizations of colloidal particles, modifications and applications of polymer colloids
